Qualities of a Trainer / Speaker:
To be a successful trainer one has to possess certain qualities. A trainer should have to keep in mind the following propositions:-
a) Training does not mean merely the transmission of knowledge and skill from the trainer to the trainees. Training – learning is basically a cordial Human relationship.
b) Knowledge and skill are not the sole prerogative of the trainer. A trainee may contribute much in the process. Trainees' active participation in any training program is therefore indispensable.
c) Expert knowledge on the subject alone is not sufficient to make one a good trainer. A trainer has to possess some good attributes.
d) A trainer has to learn the trainees. A trainer is not able to give learn to the trainees unless the trainer learns how the trainees learn. Thus a trainee can help a trainer to make the learning process effective and interesting.
e) Training – learning depends on the environment. The learning environment is characterised by appropriate physical comfort, mutual trust, mutual respect, mutual helpfulness and freedom of expression etc.
f) Introduction of the trainer as well as subject matter to be discussed. A good trainer should possess some traits, like
  1. Bearing:- Trainees start assessing a trainer as soon as a trainer becomes before them even before he / she opens mouth. Participants get psychologically affected by the bearing of a trainer. A good physical presence of trainer is very much important.
  2. Enthusiasm:- Enthusiasm can lead a trainer to effective study of a subject which ultimately leads to successful delivery in the class. A trainer might be called upon to give talk on the subject which he / she is not interested. If the participants can understand about the disinterest of the speaker it may cause a negative effect on the psychology of the trainees which may foil the entire programme of the trainer.
  3. Voice:- Effectiveness of a talk is largely dependent upon the voice of a trainer. Districts voice and correct pronunciation is appreciated by the trainees which makes them interested to be attractive in the class.
  4. Delivery:- Good delivery of lecture can easily make the participants attentive to the class. A trainer with faulty delivery may not attain success in the class. Speaking is an art. It can be improved by cultivation.

  7. Patience is one of the good qualities of human being. A trainer must have patience in adequate degree, because she / he has to deal with many participants with different temperaments.
  8. Firmness:- The success of a class depends largely on the firm control over the class.
  9. Presence of mind:- The main weapon of a trainer to control the class and lead the discussion is his / her presence of mind.
  10. Attitude of a trainer:- Attitude of a trainer is mainly responsible for the success of a class. It has a ‘conditioning effect’ on the class.
  11. Friendliness – Friendliness between a trainer and trainees is one of the conditions to create a favourable environment in the class. The whole class must be made to feel that the Trainer is one of them to whom they can look up for help and guidance. The participants should not be abused under any circumstances.
  12. Avoidance of favouritism: A trainer should be impartial, just, sincere and soft hearted. Personal liking and disliking should be avoided or at least kept as far in the background as possible.
  13. Avoidance of sarcasm and cynicism: Sarcasm and cynicism kill warmth and friendliness and pollute the atmosphere.
  14. Loyalty to colleagues: A training course runs in collaboration with other trainers’ so esprit-de-corps amongst trainers must always be fostered. One trainer should not blame or abuse another trainer in the class.
